Characters Name: René Tamaki Richard de Grandtaine aka Tamaki Suoh
Age: 17
Canon: Ouran High School Host Club
Canon Point: During episode 23, Tamaki's Unwitting Depresion
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Heterosexual. He's only ever shown romantic inclination towards Haruhi.
History: Here
Appearance: Picture over here!
Personality: On the surface Tamaki appears to be a very simple character, interested only in the frivolous and entertaining pretty girls, but there is a depth that shows through every so often. He was born in France as an illegitimate love child of the rich and powerful Suoh family of Japan, but brought up with his ailing mother. Knowing her weak health, he preferred to stay home and play the piano as it brought her joy, instead of making other friends of his own age – as a consequence, he actually led quite a sheltered childhood, without the friends and games he might have had otherwise.
His mother’s failing health prompted a visit by his scheming grandmother, who offered her the money she needed for treatment in exchange for Tamaki coming to live in Japan and forgoing contact with her. It broke Tamaki’s heart, but desperately wanting to know his mother was well, he complied. Strangely, he seems to bear his grandmother no ill will, and is always unfailingly polite and gentle to her in an attempt to be accepted properly in the family.
He’s very immature in a lot of ways, emotionally unable to understand growing feelings of romantic affection for Haruhi, preferring to believe he loves her in a fatherly manner. He’s prone to mood swings between childish exuberance and utter desolation which leads him to retreat to his 'corner of woe' and emo to himself. Fascinated by all things ‘common’ such as instant coffee, he is often sent into spasms of delight by such simple things as a continental market. These overly exaggerated moods seem to be a genuine part of him and, although they infuriate his friends on occasion, the fact he wears his heart so clearly on his sleeve is often an endearing trait.
The founder of the infamous Host Club - whose self-proclaimed duty is to provide pleasure and delight to the super-rich ladies of Ouran Academy - he treats every girl as though she is a princess, using natural charm and his exceptional good looks to make them weak at the knees. He is well aware of his own 'beauty', even at one point going as far as to name himself perfect inside and out, and clearly puts a high stock in outward appearances. However, despite this seemingly shallow behaviour, he really does care about making those around him happy and will often go out of his way to help solve issues the other host club members deem unworthy of their time. It's because of this genuine caring and generosity, that he's so popular with his friends and his egotism can be (sometimes) overlooked. Hand in hand with this willingness to help, is a healthy dose of naivety. He's a sucker for a sob story and never seems to learn, even after being duped, which leads his friends to being protective of him and others to even wonder if he's hiding Machiavellian tendencies underneath (hint: he's not).
Genuinely affectionate with a good heart, his friends at the host club are the most important people in his life, a small secular family he rules over as the ‘Daddy’ while making the far more serious Kyouya, his best friend since middle school, the ‘Mommy’. For a popular boy, having this small group of friends might not seem a big deal, but it really is to Tamaki. Having such a sheltered and isolated childhood due to his mother's illness, these are the first true friends he's ever really held claim to as his own. He might play fight with them, annoy them, be annoyed by them, and even be frightened of them on occasion (Haruhi's anger is a thing to reduce boys to tears)... but when push comes to shove, he would do anything in his power to make them happy.
In a nutshell, Tamaki truly is the quintessential Host. He's charming, handsome, egotistical, and he truly does just want to make every princess smile.
Abilities: Other than having crazy internal delusions and occasionally crumbling into dust from woe, Tamaki is a wholly normal high school boy.
SAMPLES
First Person: [Where has Tamaki been for the past couple of weeks? Why has there been no random wailings or declarations of beauty to passing women? The reason is simple... he's closeted himself in a random empty room of a random building in Holly Heights and transformed it into ~*~THE NEW HOST CLUB~*~! Finally it's done, so a familiar dulcet tone begins to smoothly talk into the phone.]
Some people are simply born beautiful, a blessing for the eyes of all of those around them. It is the duty of these people to bring joy to those less fortunate, to shine like the jewels they are. For a man of exceptional looks, the only true delight can be in making a girl smile...
That.
That is my purpose in life~
[There's a pause, for dramatic tension to build. Tamaki fondly imagines all the town hanging on his every word... the women breathless in anticipation and the men all vowing to follow his shining example.]
A Host Club is a way to share that beauty and joy with the world, a playground of riches, opulence and, of course, stunning aesthetics. For your pleasure, I have created such a club here.
[He suddenly sounds ridiculously excited.]
I even got to help paint the walls like a commoner!!!
[Alright, back to the suave and princely voice. Must make a good impression...]
All who believe they have what it takes to be a host, auditions will be held all of today within the Club.
Third Person: Taking a break from all the preparations for the new host club, a necessity in a town full of people struggling to cope with being taken from their homes, Tamaki has come down to the kitchens of his new home to look for the servants to order a midday meal.
When he saw...
He saw...
THE MICROWAVE.
Oh, it's so beautiful. Such a sleek box, such an inventive design! He had heard of them, even caught a glimpse of the magnificent machine the last time he ventured into bewildering kitchen of his home. If he remembered the rumours he had heard, it was some sort of substitute for a live chef? Commoners were so resourceful! So amazing!
He crept closer. Closer... Clooooooser...
He was practically wiggling with excitement by the time he got to the counter and pressed the button that opened the door, with a noise of sheer pleasure when it did so. OHMYGOD IT OPENS THIS IS THEBESTTHINGEVER!!! Now... What did commoners eat? He thought back to his brief foray into the 'mall' that time, and the supermarket with all those instant foods.
OH!
OH YES! He remembered now. He rummaged in one of the cupboards and found a tin that proclaimed itself as SPAGHETTIOS. And lo! Tamaki placed the tin in the microwave and pressed some random buttons, oo-ing and ahh-ing as the light came on and it started to spin round.
...
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!
Spaghettios splattered over the WHOLE KITCHEN and coat Tamaki and his phone, which he had taken out to record this monumental occasion, from head to toe... so enjoy that, residents, as one grinning moron exclaims happily.
"Commoners eat so strangely!"
